Ask The Vet: Yorkie With A Cough

Q:  My male Yorkie is 13 months old. I got him when he was 4 1/2mos.old. He started making a "honking" sound and it takes him a minute or two before he stops. This has been happening more frequently lately, usually when he is at rest. My local vet didn't comment on it. Thanks for any input.

A:  Although I cannot say for sure without examining your dog myself, the “honking” sound is most likely coughing. There are various causes for coughing from an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough or a condition called collapsing trachea which does tend to impact little dogs. Whatever the cause it is not normal. I would have your vet take another look if the dog is still experiencing the cough. There may be medication indicate depending on the cause, or at least the comfort in knowing what is going on and what to watch out for.

I have a 10 month old male Mini Schnauzer. About 5 weeks ago, I noticed that he would limp after getting up. Exercise seems to make it worse, so I have not been taking him to the park to run. I took him to the vet and she did an x-ray of his leg but not the hip. My vet said it could be hip dysplasia, but she wanted me to wait and see if it goes away before we x-ray his hip. I know hip dysplasia is not common in schnauzers. What do I do? Could it just be a soft tissue injury and, if so, how do I know without a hip x-ray? If it is dysplasia, what would you recommend? He is not on any medication. Thank you!
