Ask The Vet: Blister-Like Lesion

Q:  I have a female mini longhaired Dachshund who is 13 months old. She has a blister-like lesion on the inside of her hind leg. I have tried hot packing it which she enjoyed. It is not getting better, and is slowly getting larger. It is about the size of one of her teats. She has no other symptoms.

A:  Without examining your dog myself, I cannot tell you for sure what is going on. Although I am not suspicious for anything particularly “dangerous” due to her young age, it is definitely best for you to take her to the vet to have it checked out. The vet may recommend applying a combination of bacitracin and cortisone for about two weeks. If this is the case, or your vet recommends any type of topical treatment, you will have to ensure that your dog does not lick off the ointment. Sometimes an e-collar is necessary. Now, many pet supplies stores have begun carrying soft e-collars that replace the traditional lampshade-type e-collars.

I have a 10 month old male Mini Schnauzer. About 5 weeks ago, I noticed that he would limp after getting up. Exercise seems to make it worse, so I have not been taking him to the park to run. I took him to the vet and she did an x-ray of his leg but not the hip. My vet said it could be hip dysplasia, but she wanted me to wait and see if it goes away before we x-ray his hip. I know hip dysplasia is not common in schnauzers. What do I do? Could it just be a soft tissue injury and, if so, how do I know without a hip x-ray? If it is dysplasia, what would you recommend? He is not on any medication. Thank you!
