Ask The Trainer: Urinating On The Sofa

How did Rhea learn to like this spot? Perhaps she happened to get caught short one day when she was on the couch, and once she discovered what an appealing toilet it made, she quickly got into the habit of using it. Absorbent waterproof "chucks" don't make the spot any less attractive, though at least they protect the sofa to some extent.

Here's what to do. First, stop wasting your time and energy on the bleach. Instead, clean the sofa with an enzymatic cleanser specially formulated for the purpose. Only these cleansers actually break down the urine molecules so that the pee spot no longer smells like pee to your dog. Right now she smells bleach plus pee, I promise you!

You may have to clean the sofa repeatedly. Let the area dry completely in between treatments. It wouldn't hurt to air the treated cushions outdoors, either, in bright sunshine if possible.

Second, you'll need to keep Rhea from having access to the sofa while you re-housetrain her. Either close the door to the room where the sofa is, or put up a baby gate, or set chairs upside down on the sofa so Rhea can't jump up on it. Whatever preventive measures you choose, you'll need to keep them in place while you ...

... Third, housetrain Rhea from scratch. This may be easier or harder than it sounds! It may be harder, since she has an established habit of peeing indoors. It may be easier, since she's not a tiny puppy with no control over the muscles of urination. I suggest you take her out at least 8 times a day to start with, though; drop one pee break for each 2 weeks she goes without eliminating in the house.

I have a 10 month old male Mini Schnauzer. About 5 weeks ago, I noticed that he would limp after getting up. Exercise seems to make it worse, so I have not been taking him to the park to run. I took him to the vet and she did an x-ray of his leg but not the hip. My vet said it could be hip dysplasia, but she wanted me to wait and see if it goes away before we x-ray his hip. I know hip dysplasia is not common in schnauzers. What do I do? Could it just be a soft tissue injury and, if so, how do I know without a hip x-ray? If it is dysplasia, what would you recommend? He is not on any medication. Thank you!
