Administering Oral Medication

Liquid pet meds can be easily administered to your dog by using an eyedropper or a baby syringe. Pet meds in pill form, however, can be a bit trickier to administer. The easiest way to get your dog to swallow a pill is to hide the pill in some sticky food such as peanut butter or cream cheese. If the pill is wrapped well in the sticky food, your dog will likely swallow the pill/treat without any fuss. However, if your dog has a sensitive stomach, it may not be best to wrap his pill in some food. If this is case, here is a step-by-step guide to giving your dog a pill.

  • With one hand, gently grasp your dog’s upper jaw and pull it up so that his mouth opens and his head is angled slightly backwards.
  • With your other hand, place the pill as far back as you can on your dog’s tongue.
  • Hold your dog’s mouth closed until he swallows. Sometimes, gently rubbing your dog’s throat will stimulate him to swallow.
