Urethral Prolapse

What is urethral prolapse?
The urethra is the tube that begins at the bladder and connects up with the tip of your dog’s penis. With urethral prolapse, the end of the tube or urethra protrudes through the opening of your dog’s penis.

Urethral prolapse is most common in Bulldogs  and Boston Terriers.

What will urethral prolapse look like in my dog?
You will see a red swelling sticking out from the tip of your dog’s penis. You may also notice some blood coming out of your dog’s penis. The blood may just be a couple of drops or there may be more pronounced blood flow. Your dog may also have difficulty urinating and be in pain. Dogs usually excessively lick the end of the penis causing more damage to the penis.

How does my dog get urethral prolapse?
The exact cause is unclear. It is suspected that it may be triggered by sexual excitement or from bladder problems such as bladder stones or bladder infections. There is also some evidence that brachycephalic airway syndrome may be connected with incorrect development of the urethra.

How is urethral prolapse diagnosed?

Your vet will make a diagnosis by observing protruding urethra.

How is urethral prolapse treated?
The protruding portion of the urethra may be surgically removed. This procedure is known as a urethropexy. In some cases, post-surgery your dog will put on hormone therapy to help prevent erections.  In some cases, however, if there is no bleeding or trauma associated with urethral prolapse, you veterinarian will recommend that the prolapse not be treated at all.

How is urethral prolapse prevented?

One form of prevention is to neuter your dog early in his life as this will diminish his level of sexual excitement.

Can I get urethral prolapse from my dog?

No, you cannot contract a urethral prolapse from your dog.
