Retinal Dysplasia

What is retinal dysplasia?

Retinal dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the retina that occurs when your dog is an embryo. The retina is located at the rear of the eye, and it is comprised of specialized cells (rods and cones) which enable vision.

Retinal dysplasia ranges in severity. Minor cases, called retinal fold, can impact only one portion of your dog’s retina. In more severe cases, the entire retina may be impacted creating serious visual impairment or blindness. Retinal dysplasia is often found in conjunction with congenital cataracts.

Retinal dysplasia is found in many breeds including Labrador Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers.

What will retinal dysplasia look like in my dog?

Retinal dysplasia results in reduced vision. By the age of 2 months, severe cases of retinal dysplasia that result in blindness are generally apparent. Mild cases of retinal dysplasia may not always be easily detected since vision impairment may be minimal.

How does my dog get retinal dysplasia?

In many cases, retinal dysplasia is an inherited disease. However, it may also be caused by viral infections such as parvovirus or by trauma.

How is retinal dysplasia diagnosed?

Your dog will have to undergo a thorough eye exam.

How do you treat retinal dysplasia?

There is no treatment for retinal dysplasia.

How do you prevent retinal dysplasia?

Since retinal dysplasia is an inherited condition, afflicted dogs should not be bred.

The Canine Eye Registry Foundation (CERF) has developed a series of eye tests to determine the presence of retinal dysplasia and other inherited eye disorders. CERF has certified veterinarians who perform this testing. Dogs free of these specific eye conditions are registered with CERF. When acquiring a puppy, make sure the parents are registered with CERF as not having retinal dysplasia. Click here to visit the CERF website.

Can I get retinal dysplasia from my dog?

No, you cannot contract retinal dysplasia from your dog.
