What is PDE?
PDE is a disease that causes brain inflammation in Pugs. This condition generally strikes when your Pug is between 2 to 3 years old. It is unfortunately progressive and fatal. What will PDE look like in my dog?
Symptoms generally begin quite suddenly. Your dog will have seizures, stagger or walk in circles and appear weak and depressed. Your dog may also try to press his head against walls or furniture. These symptoms can last for a couple days or continue unabated. How does my dog get PDE?
It is not known what causes this condition, but a genetic link is suspected. How is PDE diagnosed?
Because the symptoms of PDE are so similar to the symptoms of other nervous system disorders, making a diagnosis is difficult. Your vet will try to make a definitive diagnosis by using diagnostic imaging techniques (ultrasound or MRIs) and perhaps by performing a CSP tap in which the vet uses a needle to draw out a small quantity of your dog’s spinal fluid. The fluid is then analyzed. How is PDE treated?
Unfortunately, this is a deadly disease and there is no effective treatment. However, your vet may put your dog on medication that can control seizures and slow the brain inflammation. However, as these medications are only effective for a short period of time, your dog will ultimately die from this condition. How is PDE prevented?
As a genetic link is suspected, you should never acquire a dog with a family history of this condition. Can I get PDE from my dog?
No, you cannot contract PDE from your Pug. |
