Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia

What is primary ciliary dyskinesia?

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) also known as Kartagener syndrome, is an inherited disorder of the cilia, hair-like structures that line the respiratory system. The cilia move in wave-like pulses in order to facilitate the movement of fluids, filter pathogens and protect the respiratory system.  If your dog has PCD it means that the cilia are malformed or they do not move. The inability to move fluids in the respiratory tract often leads to infection. Primary ciliary dyskinesia is an inherited condition that is often present at birth.  It also causes sperm to be immotile, rendering afflicted dogs sterile.
