Pemphigus

What is pemphigus?

Pemphigus refers collectively to a variety of autoimmune conditions impacting different layers and regions of your dog’s skin. These conditions include pemphigus erythematosus, pemphigus foliceus, pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus vegetans. Pemphigus erythematosus impacts the outermost layer of your dog’s skin called the stratum corneum. Pemphigus foliceus, the most common condition, impacts the third deepest layer of your dog’s skin called the stratum granulosum or granular layer. Pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus vegetans impact the deepest layer of your dog’s skin known as the stratum basale or basil layer.

What will pemphigus look like in my dog?

Your dog will have red, crusty and/or blistered skin. In some cases, pus-filled growths known as pustules may form. These pustules and blisters may rupture and ooze. Your dog's skin will likely be itchy and painful.

How does my dog get pemphigus?

Pemphigus is an inherited condition. However, the exact mechanism of inheritance is unknown.

How is pemphigus diagnosed?

Your vet will conduct a physical examination of your dog and take a skin biopsy.

How is pemphigus treated?

Pemphigus is treated with the use of immune suppressing drugs such as steroids. The exact type, dosage and duration of these medications depends on the severity and type of pemphigus. Antibiotic baths or creams may be used to prevent secondary infections.  Some dogs will require lifelong treatment.

How is pemphigus prevented?

Since pemphigus is an inherited condition, afflicted dogs should not be bred. Likewise, you should not acquire a dog with a family history of this condition.

Can I get pemphigus from my dog?

No, you cannot contract pemphigus from your dog.
