Panosteitis


What is panosteitis?
Panosteitis, also called pano or growing pains, is a disease that impacts the leg bones of growing puppies and young adult dogs. Panosteitis is very painful for your dog, but it is not considered to be a serious disease as it will often disappear on its own without any long-term ill effects on your dog's health. Dog's going through this condition are sometimes referred to as having "growing pains".

What will panosteitis look like in my dog?

Your dog will appear in pain while walking and might suddenly appear lame in one or more limbs. The lameness may last for a few weeks.

How does my dog get panosteitis?

The cause of panosteitis is unknown.

How is panosteitis diagnosed?
In addition to performing a physical examination of your dog, your vet will likely take an x-ray of the impacted area.  

How is panosteitis treated?
Treatment will be focussed on easing your dog’s symptoms with pain-relieving medications. It usually takes only a few months for a dog to grow out of panosteitis.

How is panosteitis prevented?
There is no prevention for panosteitis.

Can I get panosteitis from my dog?

No, you cannot contract panosteitis from your dog.
