Hemivertebrae

What is hemivertebrae?

Hemivertebrae is an inherited birth defect in which one or more of the vertebrae are malformed or fused. The vertebrae are the bones that make up the spine, and hemivertebrae can occur in more than one location on the spine. In breeds such as Bulldogs, it is actually hemivertebrae that creates the desired curly tail configuration. However, in other cases, this malformation or fusing may cause the spine to have an unnatural angle which can pinch nerves and impact muscle control.

What will hemivertebrae look like in my dog?

Symptoms of hemivertebrae depend upon which portion(s) of the spine is impacted. These symptoms include spinal pain, weakness, hind leg pain, hind leg paralysis, urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence.

How does my dog get hemivertebrae?

This is an inherited condition.

How is hemivertebrae diagnosed?

Your vet will take x-rays of your dog's vertebrae to make a diagnosis.

How is hemivertebrae treated?

Most cases of hemivertebrae are mild and require no treatment. However, more severe cases will require surgery to stabilize the spine and relieve nerve pressure.

How is hemivertebrae prevented?
