Fibrosarcoma

What is fibrosarcoma?

Fibrosarcoma is a cancerous tumor. Fibrosarcomas generally develop in soft tissue, such as the skin and subcutaneous, or beneath the skin, layers. Unfortunately, if your dog has fibrosarcoma, there is a poor prognosis for long-term survival.

What will fibrosarcoma look like in my dog?

A fibrosarcoma on the surface of your dog's skin will look like a raised and firm growth. It will not be painful, and it may grow slowly or quite quickly. The growth may be connected to underlying structures within your dog. If the growth is inside your dog, symptoms depend on the cavity or organ that is affected.

How does my dog get fibrosarcoma?

It is not known why fibrosarcomas develop.

How is fibrosarcoma diagnosed?

A diagnosis is based on biopsy results of the tumor.

How is fibrosarcoma treated?

The tumor will be surgically removed. If the tumor has spread, chemotherapy may be recommended. Radiation therapy has not been very effective in treating these tumors.

How is fibrosarcoma prevented?

It is not known how to prevent the development of these tumors.

Can I get fibrosarcoma from my dog?

No, you cannot contract fibrosarcoma from your dog.
