What is a dermoid cyst?
A dermoid cyst is a congential (present at birth) skin disorder that results in the formation of non-cancerous, sac-like growths on any part of the skin, gums, eyes or on internal organs such as the ovaries. These growths, known as cysts, may be filled with fluid. In addition, one or more cysts may be present. These cysts will continue to grow and may become as large as several inches in diameter in a matter of months. Rhodesian Ridgebacks appear to be the breed most frequently impacted by dermoid cysts. What will a dermoid cyst look like in my dog?
A dermoid cyst visible on some part of your dog’s body will usually appear as a pink, sac-like growth. The growth may open and ooze. If the cyst has formed on an internal organ, symptoms will vary depending upon the cyst’s location. For example, a dermoid cyst on the ovary will usually cause abdominal pain. How does my dog get a dermoid cyst?
In Rhodesian Ridgebacks, this is an inherited condition. A genetic link has not yet been proven in the development of these cysts in other breeds and mixed breeds. How is a dermoid cyst diagnosed?
An initial diagnosis may be made after your vet physically inspects your dog. A biopsy may be done to rule out cancer and confirm the diagnosis. How is a dermoid cyst treated?
Your vet will surgically remove the cyst. Do not try to empty the cyst by squeezing as this can irritate the skin and will not remove the cyst. How is a dermoid cyst prevented?
There is no prevention for dermoid cysts. Since they are inherited in at least some breeds, it is recommended that afflicted dogs not be bred. Likewise, you should not acquire a dog who has a family history of dermoid cysts. Can I get a dermoid cyst from my dog?
No, you cannot get a dermoid cyst from your dog. |
