Page 1 of 2 What is bartonellosis?
Bartonellosis is the condition that occurs when your dog has been infected by a bacteria called Bartonella. The bacteria is transmitted by either fleas or ticks. The bacteria can cause endocarditis which is an inflammation of your dog’s heart muscle and surface tissue. What will bartonellosis look like in my dog?
If your dog is infected with the bacteria, she will most likely develop a blood infection. She may also come down with a short-lasting fever. Dogs can be carriers of this infection without showing any signs for months or even years. In addition, a dog with bartonellosis will often have another tick-borne disease such as ehrlichiosis or babesiosis. How does my dog get bartonellosis?
This disease is transmitted by fleas and ticks. Fleas trasmit the Bartonella henslae bacteria. Different kinds of ticks, ranging from the brown trick to the American dog tick, transmit the Bartonella vinsonii bacteria.
