An arachnoid cyst is a growth filled with spinal fluid. These cysts are found between the membranes, known as the subarachnoid space, that cover your dog’s brain and spine. The cysts form when layers of the membrane split apart, and may grow to put pressure on nerve tissue.

Symptoms depend on where the cyst is located. However, some general symptoms include loss of balance, seizures and partial paralysis.

These cysts may develop due to an infection or trauma to the brain or spine. In addition, because certain breeds such as Rottweilers appear predisposed to developing arachnoid cysts, a genetic link is suspected.

Your vet will conduct a physical exam, a myelography (an x-ray that allows visualizing of spinal column structures) and an MRI to make a diagnosis.

Surgery can be preformed to remove the cyst or cysts. However, dogs prone to this condition may continue to form new cysts.

It is not known how to prevent the formation of these cysts.
