Achondroplasia

What is achondroplasia?

Achondroplasia is a lack of growth in your dog's leg cartilage which results in dwarfism. Some dogs, such as Basset Hounds and Dachshunds, are bred to have achondroplasia. In other dogs, however, achondroplasia can be an "unintentional" condition.

What will achondroplasia look like in my dog?

Dogs with achondroplasia have extremely short legs.

How does my dog get achondroplasia?

Achondroplasia is an inherited condition.

How is achondroplasia diagnosed?

Your vet will perform a physical examination of your dog and take x-rays of your dog's legs.

How is achondroplasia treated?

There is no treatment for achondroplasia.

How is achondroplasia prevented?

Since achondroplasia is inherited, affected dogs for whom achondroplasia is not part of their breed standard should not be bred. Likewise, you should not acquire a dog who has a family history of unintentional achondroplasia.

Can I get achondroplasia from my dog?
