Scottish Terriers were developed in Scotland where they were used to hunt small animals such as badgers, fox, and rabbits. Males and females should stand approximately 10 inches at the shoulder. Males should weigh 19 to 22 pounds, and females should weigh 18 to 21 pounds. Scottie coats come in black, brindle, or wheaten. These low-slung, heavyset dogs are extremely devoted to those in their families, but generally quite aloof to strangers. While most Scotties do not go looking for fights, if they are provoked or feel threatened they generally will not back down. Scotties are also notorious diggers.
