This breed was likely developed in Western England during the beginning of the 19th century to assist with herding sheep and driving cattle. Males stand at least 22 inches at the shoulder, and females stand at least 21 inches at the shoulder. Old English Sheepdogs’ distinctive ample coats, which require a lot of care, come in all shades of blue, blue merle, gray, and grizzle. In the past, Old English Sheepdogs were considered volatile, aggressive, and untrustworthy. Now, however, thanks to careful breeding, these negative characteristics have all but disappeared. Today’s Old English Sheepdogs are generally sweet, playful and loving yet protective. Due to their herding instincts, they have a tendency to try to herd people, especially children, by bumping them with their bodies.
