Newfoundland

The Newfoundland breed was developed, as the name suggests, in Newfoundland where these dogs were used to assist fishermen. Newfoundland males stand an average of 28 inches at the shoulder and weigh approximately 130 to 150 pounds. Females stand an average of 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh approximately 100 to 120 pounds. Newfoundlands have heavy, medium length coats that may be either straight or wavy and may be black, brown, gray, or landseer (white with black markings). Newfoundlands are patient, gentle, calm, loving, intelligent, and usually happy to do whatever is asked of them. These dogs are droolers.
