Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs were developed in Switzerland where they helped farmers in herding, guarding, and drafting. Swissies are the largest of the four Sennenhund breeds which, in addition to the Swissy, include the Bernese Mountain Dog, the Appenzeller and the Entelbucher. Male Swissies stand 25.5 to 28 inches at the shoulder, and females stand 23.5 to 27 inches at the shoulder. They have short but dense black coats with well-defined rust and white markings. Swissies are a steady and loyal breed. They are generally quite biddable and are alert watchdogs who will bark at unfamiliar noises and sights.
