Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers were developed in Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth who hoped to produce a water and land-retrieving dog. Tweedmouth began by taking the sole yellow puppy from a litter of black wavy-coated retrievers and mating this dog with a Tweed Water Spaniel. In an effort that took several generations and included more crosses with Tweed Water Spaniels and possibly Newfoundlands, Irish Setters, and Bloodhounds, the Golden Retriever was developed and refined. Female Golden Retrievers stand 21.5 to 22.5 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 55 and 65 pounds. Male Goldens should stand between 23 and 24 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 65 to 75 pounds. Their coats come in a variety of golden shades and are either wavy or straight. Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent, kindly, and outgoing. They love to please and to spend time with people. They are hard-wired to retrieve and carry game in their mouths, so some Goldens can be a bit orally fixated – picking up and carrying around socks, bottles, and anything they can find.
