The exact origin of the Dalmatian breed is unknown, but it appears as though early Dalmatians were used for a variety of tasks from vermin hunting to retrieving to guarding. Of course, the breed is probably best known for serving as an assistant to fire brigades. Males and females stand 19 to 23 inches at the shoulders. They can have either black or liver-colored spots. Dalmatians are sturdy dogs with loads of endurance, and they are also known for their superb memories. Some Dalmatians can be high-strung, nervous, and untrustworthy around other dogs.
