Contrary to popular perception, the name Bloodhound does not refer to any savage tendencies. The name Bloodhound likely refers to the fact that in the past these dogs were often kept by nobility or “blue bloods” who used these scenthounds for their excellent skills in following a trail. In fact, Bloodhounds are extremely sweet and gentle dogs. Males stand 25 to 27 inches at the shoulder, and females stand 23 to 25 inches at the shoulder. Their coats come in black and tan, red and tan, and tawny. Affectionate dogs, bloodhounds do have a tendency to roam and to follow their noses to exclusion of anything else. They also tend to bay and can drool. To learn how to rescue a Bloodhound in need of a home or for breeder referrals from The American Bloodhound Club click here.
