American Staffordshire Terriers were developed in the 19th century from crosses between terriers and Bulldogs. Males stand approximately 18 to 19 inches at the shoulder, and females stand approximately 17 to 18 inches at the shoulder. American Staffordshire Terrier coats come in all varieties of colors. American Staffordshire Terriers were originally used to help around farms, hunt large game, and protect property. Unfortunately, they were also used in the “sport” of dog fighting. These dogs are highly intelligent, generally responsive to commands, powerful, and quite fearless. American Staffordshire Terriers have a tendency to be over-protective and, once aroused, will rarely back down from a fight. These tendencies need to be closely watched to make sure they remain under control.
