Breed by Breed Health

Dog breed health information is right here. Click on a breed listed below to see the breed description and some common health problems associated with the breed. We have dog breed health information for all breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, and we have links to rescue contacts and breeder referrals. Just because a condition is associated with your dog's breed does not mean that your dog will be affected. Likewise, your dog may be impacted by diseases and conditions not listed under his or her breed.
Responsible breeders will try to eliminate diseases with a genetic component from their breeding stock by having their dogs screened for genetic health problems prior to breeding. The following links are to organizations that evaluate and register dogs for various conditions with genetic components such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, congenital heart diseases, and congenital eye diseases. Before acquiring a purebred dog, you should visit these dog health organizations' web sites for information on your prospective puppy's parents and other relatives.
