Ask the Vet: How Often Can I Bathe My Dog?

Q:  My 2 year old yellow lab loves the mud and dirt. He gets so dirty every day. How often can I bathe him?

A:  Sounds like your dog is having a lot of fun! However, I understand that you want to keep him a bit cleaner. Obviously, if your dog has gotten really dirty you should bathe him whenever to keep him clean and prevent any possible skin conditions or infections from developing. However, as a general rule, you should bathe your dog not more than once every two to four weeks. For shampoo, you should use a gentle dog shampoo. You can also often dilute the dog shampoo with water. You should never use a human shampoo because human shampoos do not have the correct pH for a dog’s skin and coat. Thus, human shampoos can cause your dog to develop rashes or other skin irritations.

Good luck to you!
