Ask The Vet: Neutering

Q:  Besides the obvious, why is it necessary to neuter my dog?

A:  There are many reasons, but these are some of the reasons I consider the most salient when discussing neutering with patients. Neutering can help to resolve behaviors such as humping (which often can start fights), roaming (and getting lost or injured), and urinating/marking on almost every surface. Also, I sometimes find that intact male dogs can be more “hyper.” Neutering will also help reduce discharge from the penis. Finally, intact males can develop prostate cancer and testicular tumors.
