Ask The Vet: Ibuprofen

Q:  I have a Pit Bull who is 2 years old. I have just noticed that her spine appears to curve upwards and she seems in pain. I have never noticed this before. We do have another Pit Bull and the two dogs play roughly sometimes. I am hoping it is nothing major. Is it OK to give her ibuprofen?

A:  Please do NOT give your dog ibuprofen. For dogs, ibuprofen can easily be toxic. Your dog should be assessed by a vet so that the vet can determine what is going on and what medication may need to be prescribed. From what you are describing, the pain could be coming from your dog’s spine or abdomen. You can assess whether there is spinal pain by gently pressing on either side of your dog’s spine with your thumb and pointer finger of one hand. You want to be very gentle, but you are looking for any sign of pain such as your dog bending away from you. You can assess whether there is abdominal pain by gently pushing up on the belly. Start at the end of the ribs and work your way back to the pelvis. Again, be gentle, but look for signs of discomfort. If you can find where the pain is coming from, bring this to the attention of your vet.
