Iams & Eukanuba Product Recall
|
|
Proctor & Gamble, makers of Iams and Eukanuba, has initiated a pet food recall. The company states that the recall, which includes veterinary and some specialized dry food, is a precautionary measure due to the possibility that these foods may be contaminated with salmonella. However, as of yet, no salmonella-related illnesses have been reported.
The food being recalled has been sold throughout the U.S. and Canada through vet’s offices and at specialty pet retailers. A complete list of the recalled items can be found by clicking here.
Symptoms of Salmonella infections in dogs include lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. If your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms, immediate veterinary attention is necessary. It should also be noted that dogs may be carriers of Salmonella meaning they can exhibit no symptoms but be able to pass the infection to other dogs. Salmonella can also impact humans. Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. In rare cases, Salmonella can also cause more severe problems including arthritis and heart lining inflammation.
If you suspect you have been exposed to Salmonella you should contact your medical provider immediately. To help protect against the spread of Salmonella, all surfaces that have come into contact with any Salmonella-contaminated products should be thoroughly cleaned, and dog owners should wash their hands in warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds after coming into contact with these products.
