Ask The Vet: Blood From Nose

Q:  I have a male French bulldog who is 3 years old. He is reverse sneezing, and blood came out of his nose today.  I am very worried. He does have trouble breathing due to his breed, but the blood concerns me. Please let me know if this is serious, or what this might be.

A:  Without examining your Frenchie myself I cannot tell you for sure, but is possible that the sneezing was so strong he ruptured a surface blood vessel. If this were the case, then the vessel should heal on its own. However, if blood continues to appear then you should take him to the vet. Also, if you notice any other type of discharge coming from his nose or any other signs that he is not feeling well (pawing at the face, change in energy, eating habits, etc) then I would also have him checked out. He is a young dog so I am not so much worried about a tumor, but bacterial or fungal infections are possible.
