Ask The Vet: Coughing Lab

Q:  I have a male Lab who is 10 years old. He has been coughing up phlegm for about a week. I have not been to the vet. What could it be?

A:  Without examining your dog myself, I cannot tell what is causing the cough with phlegm. A cough can be caused by a variety of different things from infections and allergies to, especially in older dogs, heart conditions and cancer. I would definitely suggest taking your dog to your vet who can examine him and get to the root of the problem.
