Ask The Vet: Euthanasia

Q:  My dog is 13 years old. He saw the vet on Saturday who said he has a mass in his stomach and on his back leg. He limps, he vomits frequently, coughs, is incontinent, has cataracts and is deaf. I am heartsick. I don’t want him to suffer, and he takes medication for pain. His appetite is good. However, I know that dogs do not always display that they are in pain. Do you recommend euthanasia?

A:  I am sorry to hear about your dog and his ailments. It would be impossible for me to tell whether you should euthanize your dog as I have not seen your dog myself and I am not your dog’s vet. It is best to consult with your dog’s own vet on this decision. However, to be honest, it does not sound like your dog has a happy existence and euthanasia may be an appropriate choice. You are right that dogs don’t always demonstrate that they are in pain in a manner in which we easily can relate to. In addition, just because your dog continues to eat does not mean that he is not suffering.
