Ask The Vet: Crusty Ears

Q:  I have Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and the tips of my dogs’ ears are crusty and starting to bleed. I live in Colorado, so I don't know if it's the cold. The crustiness and bleeding also happens mostly in the winter although it happens sporadically.  I put Bag Balm, Horseman's Dream, and Peace & Kindness on their ears. What could the problem be, and what should I do?

A:  I am sorry to hear about your dogs’ crusty ears. There are multiple possibilities that could explain these symptoms. Some possibilities include frostbite, vasculitis, allergies or ear infections. Your best bet is to have their ears examined by a vet. The examination may include a cytology, culture or even a biopsy of the impacted areas. In the meantime, if the creams are providing any measure of relief to your dogs, I would continue to use them. You should also discourage your dogs from scratching at the impacted areas.
