Ask The Vet: Eating A Dead Animal

Q:  I have a female Yorkie-Pomeranian who is 6 years old. My husband found her chewing on a dead rabbit, and now she has diarrhea and has been vomiting. She won't eat or drink anything. What should we do?

A:  Dogs will eat the most lovely things, won’t they!?! Seriously, however, eating a dead rabbit can possibly cause a host of different problems. It is very possible for your dog’s gastrointestinal tract to be upset simply from ingesting something so different from her normal diet, but there are also more rare diseases that can result from eating a dead rabbit such as tapeworms, rodenticide toxicity, botulism and tularemia.

Tapeworms can be contracted from your dog's ingestion of the dead rabbit. However, symptoms of tapeworm such as vomiting and diarrhea would take weeks to develop after your dog’s contact with the rabbit. Nevertheless, it is something to keep in mind.
